Nine Ivies Combine For Five Points In Ice Hockey Play Wednesday

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Nine Ivies returned to the ice on Wednesday, Feb. 14, as women’s ice hockey group play continued and men’s ice hockey group play began at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
 
Yale women’s ice hockey alumna Phoebe Staenz (22:17) scored her third goal in PyeongChang, propelling Switzerland to a 2-1 victory over Sweden and securing a Group B sweep. The Swiss will take on the loser of Finland and the Olympic Athletes from Russia in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 17.
 
Princeton women’s ice hockey product Caroline Park (13:31) and Harvard women’s ice hockey alumna Randi Griffin (17:36) concluded their Olympic competition as Unified Korea finished Group B play 0-3 following a 4-1 loss to Japan. Griffin netted Unified Korea’s goal versus Japan—its sole tally in PyeongChang.
 
Five Ivies took Olympic ice for the first time as the United States men’s ice hockey team dropped its Olympic opener, 3-2 in overtime, to Slovenia in Group B play. Yale alum Brian O’Neill (13:31) registered a goal and an assist, while current Harvard undergraduate Ryan Donato (18:26) added an assist in the contest.
 
Harvard men’s ice hockey product Noah Welch (23:32) and Yale alumni Mark Arcobello (18:44) and Broc Little (13:03) also featured for the American side, whose coaching staff includes Yale head coach Keith Allain.
