PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Six Ivies competed on Saturday, Feb. 10, the first full day of 2018 Winter Olympic action, which included the allocation of 15 Olympic medals.
Rosie Brennan, a United States cross-country skier from Dartmouth, finished 58th with a time of 47:36.0 in the 7.5km + 7.5km skiathlon—the event in which Jessie Diggins placed fifth to record the best individual finish for an American in an Olympic cross-country skiing event since 1976.
In the biathlon,
Emily Dreissigacker—who rowed at Dartmouth—posted the top American finish in the 7.5km sprint, placing 51st with a time of 23.27.2.
Susan Dunklee, a fellow Dartmouth alum and World Championships silver medalist in the 12.5km mass start, finished 66th with a time of 24:13.1 in the 7.5km sprint.
Caroline Park, a Princeton women’s ice hockey alum, and
Randi Griffin, a Harvard women’s ice hockey product, saw ice time in the Olympic opener for the much-discussed Unified Korea women’s ice hockey team, featuring players from both North and South Korea.
In Unified Korea’s 8-0 loss to Switzerland, Park registered a shot in 6:41 of action, while Griffin saw 18:57 of ice time. From the other bench, Yale women’s ice hockey product
Phoebe Staenz used seven shots to net a pair of goals in 23:17 of ice time—the most of any Swiss skater. Staenz hopes to propel Switzerland to back-to-back Olympic medals, having been part of the bronze medal club in 2014 in Sochi.
As Bermuda’s lone Winter Olympic qualifier, Dartmouth alum
Tucker Murphy served as the country’s flag bearer during the 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday, Feb. 9. American bobsledders
Jamie Greubel Poser, a Cornell field hockey and track & field alum, and
Lauren Gibbs, a Brown volleyball product, also featured prominently in NBC’s coverage of the official opening of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games.
