PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League champions Princeton (17-7, 10-4 Ivy) and Yale (16-7, 10-4 Ivy) will meet in the Ivy League Volleyball Playoff at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, in New Haven, Conn., to determine the League’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Princeton clinched a share of its third-straight Ivy League title with an emphatic 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) victory at Harvard on Nov. 10, but left the door open for Yale with a 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 16-25, 15-11) loss at Dartmouth in its season finale on Nov. 11.
Yale then forced the Ivy League Volleyball Playoff with a 3-2 (25-17, 28-30, 31-33, 25-19, 15-8) win at Columbia on Nov. 11. With the victory, the Bulldogs claimed their first Ivy League crown since a string of five-straight from 2010-14.
Princeton owns a League-best 17 Ivy League championships, while Yale claims nine—seven of which have come over the past 10 seasons.
The Tigers and Bulldogs split the regular-season series, with each team winning on the road. Yale will host the playoff, having won 4-of-7 regular-season sets. The Bulldogs have won 57-of-60 League matches at home, dating back to 2009, though one of those three losses was a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-22) defeat at the hands of the Princeton on Sept. 30.
The Ivy League’s automatic berth has been determined via playoff on five prior occasions. Yale, which has appeared in 3-of-5 playoffs (2004, 2010, 2014), has proved victorious in two prior editions (2004, 2014). Princeton has participated in a pair of playoffs (2004, 2015), but has never claimed victory. Penn (2001, 2010) and Harvard (2015) own the other playoff crowns.
Princeton and Yale will each look to advance to its seventh NCAA Tournament. The duo has combined to represent the Ivy League in five of the past six NCAA Tournaments. Yale is 1-of-2 Ivy League programs to have earned an NCAA Tournament win—advancing to the second round in 2004 and 2008.
